BC KAYAKING COURSES

The WKI BC kayaking courses are based out of Port Hardy at the northern end of Vancouver Island and operate in Queen Charlotte Strait and the BC Central Coast from June to September. The routes are chosen for their remoteness, beauty and appropriate level of challenge. The area between the northern tip of Vancouver Island and Rivers Inlet defines the southern portion of the Great Bear Rainforest, one of the last great wildlife refuges in North America. This section of coastline has the highest population density of Grey whales on the BC coast. Humpbacks and groups of Pacific white-sided dolphins are also frequently seen in these waters.

On Expedition Skills I you will use your improved boat handling and route planning skills to kayak efficiently to seldom visited secret spots some of which show signs of having been ancient village sites. On Expedition Skills II we paddle stretches of rugged shoreline past granite islands crowned with bonsai evergreens across to the miles of golden sand at Burnett Bay where we practice surf landings and launchings. In this remote west coast paradise we camp in places where you feel as if you are the first person to step foot ashore in a long time. The BC Central Coast provides a unique wilderness classroom with a variety of challenges so diverse that the National Outdoor Leadership School conducts their sea kayak instructors course on this coast to prepare their instructors to teach students on the Pacific Coast from Alaska to Patagonia.
