WKI provides a detailed list of personal clothing and equipment for each course. This is included in the package of course materials supplied upon registration.
What’s Included
With every course WKI supplies:
Touring Kayak, paddle, spare paddle, pump, spray deck and sponge.
Paddle floats, rescue slings
Chart of the Course Area - this will be your working chart and yours to keep.
Bearing Compass.
Weather charts - for plotting weather forecasts.
Instruments for chart work.
Course notes and trip checklists.
Notebook.
Group cookware and camp gear.
Camp meals.
Group equipment including VHF radios, GPS, satellite phone and expedition first aid kit.
Kayaks
We use Seaward kayaks and have several models available to fit a range of paddlers. If there is a specific model of Seaward kayak that you would like to use we can with advance notice usually arrange to have that kayak available to you on the course. We also have Feathercraft singles available for those wishing to gain experience with folding kayaks however there is a $75 US surcharge to cover the assembly, cleaning and maintenance (the reality of folding boats). There are definite advantages to using your own kayak on this course. We require that your kayak be a full size touring kayak in good condition (smaller hybrid kayaks lack the needed cargo capacity). The ultimate decision about the acceptability of the your kayak rests with the instructors. Please call the office to discuss bringing your own kayak.
Drysuits
Current evolutions in breathable fabrics have radically changed drysuits for marine use. These new Gore technology suits offer comfort above the water and excellent immersion core temperature protection. They come in one or two piece configurations. The best line of these breathable drysuits we’ve found is from Kokatat.
Wetsuits
New wetsuit materials have radically improved flexibility and comfort, this combined with new seam sealing techniques make for warmth and performance. Our favorite suits are made by Body Glove.
