Expedition Skills I is designed for paddlers who want to enhance their knowledge and skills while also gaining practical experience on the west coast of British Columbia, one of the Worlds great sea kayaking destinations. This program will build your confidence and advance your independent paddling ability. It is a comprehensive introduction to the many aspects of kayak touring including: boat handling, rescues, navigation, weather theory, and wilderness skills. Also included is an introduction to yoga based principles of conditioning, flexibility and strength for kayaking. Sea kayaking is a life long pursuit and this simple set of exercises will make sure that you paddle long and paddle strong.
The six-day trip is packed with on water sessions, camp discussions and interactive lectures. The emphasis is on developing your understanding of the principles of seamanship for kayakers with the goal of making you a more informed and safer paddler. The model used is that of a kayaking trip with a group of your friends where everyone participates in the decision-making and the outcome of the trip. You will have the opportunity to route plan and gain a broad range of experience with the support of experienced instructors.
This course is offered in the waters of Queen Charlotte Strait near the northern tip of Vancouver Island and Clayoquot Sound on the Islands west coast. These scenic areas are frequented by Orca and Grey whales and have a number of exceptional campsites which combined with a diversity of sea conditions makes for excellent instructional settings and a great paddling trips.
